What is A Podcast RSS Feed? and How To Create one for your Podcast?

An RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is a standardized format for distributing and sharing content, including podcasts. An RSS feed for a podcast includes information about the podcast, such as its title, description, and episode list, as well as the URLs for the audio files of each episode.

When you create a podcast, you will typically use a hosting service to store your audio files. This hosting service will provide you with an RSS feed URL, which you can then submit to podcast directories, such as iTunes and Spotify, and other platforms that support podcasting.

An RSS feed for a podcast typically includes the following elements:

  • Channel elements (e.g., title, link, description)
  • Item elements (e.g., title, link, description, enclosure)
  • The Channel element contains information about the podcast as a whole, such as the title, link, and description.
  • The Item element contains information about each individual episode, such as the title, link, and description, as well as the URL for the audio file (enclosure).

Once your RSS feed is set up and submitted to directories, listeners will be able to subscribe to your podcast using a podcast player or aggregator, such as Apple Podcasts or Spotify, and automatically receive new episodes as they are released.

It’s worth noting that you need to host your podcast somewhere, and the hosting service will generate the RSS feed for you, you can also use some services like Castos, Anchor, etc.

The 7 Steps Create A Podcast RSS Feed?

Creating an RSS feed for your podcast involves several steps:

  1. Choose a hosting service: You will need a hosting service to store your audio files and generate the RSS feed for you. There are many hosting services available, such as Anchor, Castos, Soundcloud, and Libsyn. You can compare the features and pricing of different hosting services to find the one that best fits your needs.
  2. Create an account: Once you have chosen a hosting service, you will need to create an account. This usually involves providing some basic information, such as your name, email address, and podcast title.
  3. Upload your episodes: After you have created your account, you can begin uploading your episodes. You’ll need to provide information such as the episode title, description, and audio file.
  4. Set up your RSS feed: Your hosting service will automatically generate an RSS feed for your podcast. You can usually access the feed by logging into your account and looking for a link or button labeled “RSS feed” or “RSS URL.”
  5. Submit your feed to podcast directories: Once you have your RSS feed URL, you can submit it to popular podcast directories such as iTunes, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. This will allow listeners to find your podcast and subscribe to it.
  6. Validate your RSS feed: Before submitting your RSS feed to podcast directories, you should validate it to make sure it is properly formatted and contains all the necessary information. You can use a tool such as the W3C Feed Validation Service to check your feed for errors.
  7. Update your feed regularly: When you upload new episodes, your hosting service will update the RSS feed automatically.

It’s worth noting that some hosting services like Anchor allow you to create your podcast with them and they will provide the hosting, RSS feed, and distribution to the major podcasting platforms.
